Kim Gordon has announced an Australian tour to promote her latest solo album, The Collective, with five dates on the itinerary for this July.

The trek will begin with two back-to-back shows in Sydney (Eora) on Thursday July 18 and Friday 19, with venue info for both yet to be announced. The former Sonic Youth frontwoman will head to Adelaide (Kaurna) next – playing the Dom Polski Centre on Saturday July 20 as part of this year’s Unsound festival – before heading up to Brisbane (Meanjin) for an Open Frame show at the Powerhouse on Sunday July 21. And to wrap it all up, she’ll perform at the Northcote Theatre in Melbourne (Naarm) on Wednesday July 24.

Ticketing dates for Sydney’s shows are yet to be confirmed, but we know that tickets for Adelaide’s show go on sale at 10am tomorrow (May 2), followed by the Brisbane and Melbourne shows at the same time the following day (May 3). Presales for those latter two shows will also begin at 10am tomorrow – head here for info on all ticket sales.

The tour follows the Australian premiere of Gordon’s visual art exhibition Objective Projection, which debuted exclusively at the Brisbane Powerhouse for this year’s ΩHM Festival of Other Music. It comes in support of The Collective – the follow-up to her 2019 solo debut No Home Record – which arrived back in March of this year and saw Gordon dive deeper into the realms of hip-hop, trap and noise music.

The Collective reunited Gordon with producer Justin Raisen, and upon its announcement, a press release told us the record would advance their “joint world-building” with Raisen’s “damaged, blown out dub and trap constructions playing the foil to Gordon’s intuitive word collages and hooky mantras, which conjure communication, commercial sublimation and sensory overload”.

In a glowing review of No Home Record, Lauren Baxter wrote for TheMusic.com.au: “Pushing herself to create in new and exciting ways, this solo offering is familiar in its unfamiliarity. A dirge of truths relayed in her quintessential Downtown-New-York-cool way, Gordon’s poetry is the star, broadcast through a sketchy PA system in an industrial warehouse. Her words cut through the sonic glitches in a way only she can.”
