Why New Found Glory and Podiums Don't Mix

13.09.2009 | boxhead | 9 COMMENTS

Let me tell you all a little story about why New Found Glory and Podiums don’t mix… For all of you that know me now is the time to go straight the comments and write “great blog… am moshing”.  Ok ok so for the others gather round children because pupa Campbell is telling war stories about growing up, having good friends and some of the music we listened to on the way…

So it was another dark night at the Swinburne residence and your uncle New Found Wal has stopped off for a couple of cylindrical tubes, in true Res fashion the night got rather loose and ended up at a little place us old kids liked to call switch.  Every thing was going great on the 80’s disco style dance floor until of course on comes the beloved sounds of new found glory and it was straight onto the podiums to sing at the top of our voices and bounce around like astronauts in fast forward.  Mind you this was back in the day where your uncle New Found Wal resembled more of a gummy bear with a pogo stick than the club goer he has evolved into.

Anyway back to the story… I believe the song was hit or miss, and we had just discovered that pop punk jumps looked much bigger when done jumping off podiums… and then dar dar.. dar dar, off we went and all I can say is whatever I say next it will just come off sounding like a little kid in an insurance commercial “and then he bit me in the part, and my head when that way and my legs went that way!”.

The next 6 months of my life involved hospitals, crutches and excuses as to why I wasn’t going to physio… And that is why New Found Glory and Podiums don’t mix.

So to close off each blog I’m going to include a section called only 2 of these are true.  It will be up to you to comment me back as to which ones are true.

1.    Brett from the Omen love Boys Night Out – Trainwreck more than life
2.    Josh Stuart from BCE has a secret solo project that no one else in his band knows about
3.    I was once scheduled for a back yard grudge match with Micheal Crafter but chickened out when he became addicted to going to the gym
4.    Adrian Kelly really is a nice guy once you get to know him
5.    All Time Low have a box of sliced and peeled oranges on their rider.

Nostalgia - The Get Up Kids

11.09.2009 | paik | 8 COMMENTS

Remember the days when that dirty 3 letter word wasn't all about how long your hair is, how many colours you have in it, or how tight your jeans are? I do, or well, i've read about it. The Get Up Kids are a cornerstone of my musical fabric existance. Ever since I heard 'I'm a Loner Dottie, A Rebel' from the stellar 1998 album Something to Write Home About, It's been a wonderful relationship between TGUK and I.

After the break up in 2004, i was left lost. It was like losing a close friend. Get Up Kids were like that puppy you got one day, and the one day, he runs away. I was heartbroken, especially after never seeing them live (which will change in February/March, but we'll get to that later.)

Fast forward a few years, 1,000's of fans rejoiced as TGUK announced their return. Memories flooded back when I was in high school, my first kiss, the first time i fucked, the first time i got arrested. TGUK was there. It's been a lovely relationship so far, and i'm sure it'll be a even better one with years to come.

Onto the whole touring thing, TGUK are on Soundwave with a few of my favourite bands from all genres. It's been a good 7-8 years. And finally. The time has come.

Long live TGUK.

Local Bands Part 2

07.09.2009 | Binney | 12 COMMENTS

Its been awhile since I posted up a blog about another band so without further delay I present you with my next pick of the local scene, As Silence Breaks.

A metal bands know they’re doing something good when their fans are jumping and moshing in their lounge room when they put the band’s cd into their cd players. As Silence Breaks is one of those bands that you don’t need to see live to mosh to but the experiene is way better when you see them live. Planting their feet firmly in the metalcore genre these boys from Western Sydney don’t plan to pull any punches. Their songs are the perfect no bullshit stuff that you want to hear. From start to finish their songs give you your hit of aggressiveness and melody. The riffs are slick and groove worthy, just the kind of stuff you need when a circle pit needs forming. Vocalist Sam is a powerhouse with his vocal delivery and you haven’t heard him until you hear him live.

The band has a bit of history so you may already know of them. As Silence Breaks formed about two years ago and have been hard at work creating a strong fanbase as well as forging a reputation to proud of. 2008 saw As Silence Breaks hit the road playing over 50 shows across the country. In December of 2008 they played a 13 date national tour alongside Australian deathcore giants The Red Shore as well as For The Fallen Dreams and In Trenches. As Silence Breaks came into their own on this tour demonstrating that they aren’t a band to be taken lightly by showing off their dominating and commanding stage presence.

Guitarist Con Zagas had this to say when asked about what they think of their fans...
“Our fans are the most amazing group of people out! We wouldn’t be able to be where we are without them.”

Dominating is one of the words that come to mind when trying to describe their live performance. Vocalist Sam is literally an unstoppable juggernaut live and the rest of the band are unrelenting in their flawless performance. Everyone is kept busy throughout As Silence Breaks’ set. If you’re a mosher you’ll be moving plenty or if you just like to head bang you better be prepared to wake up with a sore neck the next day. Upon seeing them live I can say that their name is truly fitting as the silence is definitely breaks as soon as they begin delivering the goods.

As Silence Breaks is set to release their debut self titled album this year. They’re currently finishing up the Dead Rising tour with Vegas In Ruins, which will end early September. From there As Silence Breaks will be going on tour with Hereafter during October. International shows are also running through the rumor mill at this point in time but regardless of when it is to happen one thing is for sure, they’ll be playing around the world soon enough.

As Silence Breaks is…

Sam Rilatt – Vocals
Ben Irwin – Guitar/Vocals
Con Zagas – Guitar
Ethan Duguid – Bass
Reece Kirby – drums
