So 2009 has all but come to an end. Personally I’ve had a great year. Loving life. Anyway the almighty heavenly father of KYS, Jared “The Athlete” Heilborn has asked for bloggers to post their top 10’s for 2009. Well here ya go …
Top 10 Albums of 2009 (in no particular order)
Claude Von Stroke- Bird Brain
Great record from start to finish from the house legend. Some really great beats on this disc. The track ‘The Greasy Beat’ feat. Bootsy Collins is a standout for me.
Blakroc- Blackroc
The Black Keys team up with a slew of hiphop stars to create one of the most unique records of 2009.
Amanda Blank- I love You
American rapper who has worked with some pretty big names over the years. This record is huge. Dirty electro fused hiphop. What a woman.
The Bloody Beetroots- Romborama
This record is just straight up dirt. Rude beats that make me wanna get nude. Love it.
Fever Ray- Fever Ray
Solo project for Karin Dreijer Andersson of the band The Knife. This album is hauntingly good and produced six massive singles. The video clips for these tracks are also pretty amazing.
Royksopp- Junior
Junior is the first album in around 5 years from Norway’s finest and it’s a little beauty. So many great songs on this album. Great work from my Viking cousins.
Passion Pit- Manners
Such a fun record. Will be getting a solid workout over summer. Dance!
Grizzly Bear- Veckatmist
Amazing harmonies on this album. Great times!
Calvin Harris- Ready For The Weekend
What a great pop release. Album is full of catchy tracks that get your toes tapping.
Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Linx pt. II
Excellent release from the hip hop legend. Some of his best work yet in my opinion.
Honorable mention...
Lady GaGa- The Fame Monster
P P P P Poker Face. Chic? Dude? Regardless this album was one of my favorites for the year. Great pop songs. Keen for GaGa to tour here next year. Will be huge!
Some other bands that dropped decent stuff this year include Animal Collective, Kid Cudi, Duck Sauce, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Phoenix, The XX, Air, Jamie T, The Eels, Dirty Projectors, Dan Sultan, Metric, Lost Valentinos, Mumford & Sons, Muse, N.A.S.A, Dizzee Rascal, Junior Boys, La Roux, Lucero, Daniel Merriwether, Brother Ali, Major Lazer, and many many more. Good year for tunes!
I figured I’d drop a list of my favorite Australian releases of 2009 as well…

Kisschasy- Seizures
Lisa Mitchell- Wonder
Bertie Blackman- Secrets and Lies
Art Vs Science- Art Vs Science
Philadelphia Grand Jury- Hope Is For Hopers
Hilltop Hoods- State Of The Art
The Nation Blue- Rising Waters
Young Heretics- The Dreamers
The Duvtons- Greatest Hits (Marvel- Bottle of Gin will do thanks mate)
Top 10 live shows of 2009.
Now to be totally honest, I’m not even sure if I went to 10 live shows this year. I most certainly didn’t go to 10 shows that were any good. So what I will do is list my favorite live ‘shows/events’ instead…
Lupe Fiasco @ The Palace
N.E.R.D @ Hisense Arena
Yacht Club DJs @ Ding Dong
You Am I @ Prince
Steve Aoki @ Sorry Grandma
Old mate who plays Credence covers @ Puggs every Thursday night.
DJ sets on opening night @ The Gazelle Bar
Whoever the bands were that made me dance for hour’s @ The Spanish Festival
Hulkamania @ Rod Laver Arena
Horse Racing in Melb/Syd/QLD. Great days to be alive!
Top 10 Films of 2009
Where The Wild Things Are
District 9
Inglorious Basterds
Up
Anvil
The Wrestler
Moon
Balibo
Star Trek
Avatar (Haven’t seen it yet but I’m predicting it will rule).
Top 10 Celebrities of 2009.
I questioned Jared on why I should list my top 10 celebrities for 2009 or what that even means but anyway here is my list of celebs…
Tiger Woods- The greatest golfer in the world who also has the greatest time management and organisational skills on earth. I tip my hat to a man who can have that many broads on the go. Just taaaaaap it in.
Lady GaGa- Some say GaGa has got a wang, others say she’s a broad… (I vote woman) either way Lady GaGa was huge in 2009. Buy The Fame Monster if you haven’t already. The album is a beauty.
Katy Perry- If she were president, she’d be Babe’raham Lincoln.
Michael Jackson- Sad day when the king of pop passed away. Strange dude but largely misunderstood in my opinion. RIP
Patrick Swayze- RIP Bodie… “He Ain’t coming back!”
Adam Fiske- Star of the hit TV show ‘Keepn It Real’ 2009 has been a huge year for this bloke. He’s a legit Viking too. What a guru.
Barrack Obama- New President for the US is inaugurated. People are stoked and cries of “Change is here!” are heard across the world. Not sure why? The dude is just a puppet for the corporate interests that govern the world. The guy also manages to win the Nobel Peace Prize for sending more troops to the middle east… go figure?
Brendan Fevola- Old mate gets well pissy at the brownlow medal dinner, grabs a microphone for the footy and calls out Chris Judd for trying to be Steven Segal. I thought it was funny.
Rhianna- Gets beat up by her boyfriend and is in the news for months. Tipping the old backhander from Chris Brown helped album sales along a little too (album was really good mind you). Not gonna lie, she’s got a pretty sweet haircut.
Kanye West- Legit guru. The guy loves himself so much that it’s actually amazing. Another big year for Mr. West. His stage invasion at the MTV awards was brilliant. What a guy.
Anyways that’s it for now. Have a Merry Christmas, drink lots, eat good food, dance, smile, and go fishing.
God Bless Ya!

Rrrrrrrrraacing!
It has been some time since my last foray into the realms of the KYS blog. To be totally honest not much has been happening in the land of the Viking. You know how it is… work and stuff. Spring is well and truly here and I’m pretty stoked about it. The garden is in full bloom and my veggie crop is starting to produce the goods. Love it! This time of year is also great because the spring racing carnival kicks off. I’m lucky enough through my job to have a little bit to do with horse racing and getting down to the track is one of my favorite things to do (members or corporate of course). The spring carnival is amazing and it’s not only the beautiful creatures running around the track that make it great, it’s all the other things that come along with it- fine food, wine, fashion, and entertainment all come together and make this time of year one of the best. With a bit of luck you might be able to buy yourself some money while you’re at it. Nothing like backing a few winners in spring. It’s a great time to be in Melbourne and if you love a good day out then I recommend you go get amongst it.
Speaking of the Spring Carnival… I was down at Caulfield for the BMW Caulfield Cup last weekend and I couldn’t believe how many bogans were out and about. Guys- bright coloured novelty suits and top hats aren’t funny and make you look like a cock. Wearing the latest billabong shirt under a cheap ill-fitting suit from man-to-man also doesn’t do you any favors. Skate shoes or chucks and a studded belt just don’t cut it with a suit either. I mean yeah you’re punk rock and stuck in the 90s, but we can already tell you’re all about the anarchy by the big fucking holes in your ears and the thing hanging out of your nose. Sort yourself out lads, it’s not hard. Girls- getting shitfaced and stumbling around carrying your shoes in your hand while your friend tries to stuff your left tit back into your dress is not appealing you stupid tart. Hold yourself together for fucks sake! Ease up on the fake tan too… nothing wrong with applying a bit of the old bondi bronze but there is a line. Don’t cross it. I think it’s safe to say that the general admission areas of race tracks during spring carnival attract a bevy of tiprats and bogans. It’s the sport of kings, what happened to having a bit of dignity? Bloody plebs.
On the music front I haven’t really been listening to anything new and noteworthy of late. Calvin Harris released a ripper new record a month or so ago and that’s been getting a heavy work-out on the stereo. Pretty much album of the year in my opinion. My good pals The Duvtons recently released their debut album. If you’re punk as fuck like me then you will froth on it. Not going to lie I actually don't mind this record. Check them out if you get a chance, word has it they’ll be opening proceedings for good old Guttermouth when they head out to oz later this year. You beauty. My relationship with Marvel has flourished since he got a decent haircut.
Summer is almost here so every bastard has gone out and organised a festival. Take your pick, there’s one for pretty much every flavor. Nothing has really got me on the festival front this year. Someone needs to bring out Bruce Springsteen (Cam Chambers, sort this out mate). Alas, I will probably head along to Pyramid for new years and there’s a fair chance I’ll cut rug and party at stereosonic and the big day out too. Good times!
Anyways that’s all I’ve got time for. FYI- Barry Hall will be the difference next year. Go dogs.
I need a holiday.
Until next time… God bless ya!

Man O War! Can't lose...
It seems everyone around here is frothing on the old Soundwave announcement. Good times! Junior weightlifting prodigy and KYS big wig Jared ‘The Hebrew Hammer’ Heilborn recently sent out an email asking for us bloggers to write about this soundwave festival. I immediately replied and said mate… are you sure you want me to do this? His response was FAITH NO MORE Viking! The man raised a good point.
Straight off the bat, I will not be attending soundwave. To be totally honest there are two bands on that line-up that tickle my fancy… Faith No More and Jane’s Addiction. The rest I have never heard of, think they are shithouse, or have seen a bunch of times before and couldn’t care less if they were back in Australia. I guess this festival is just not my thing and I could think of a million other things I would rather do with my time than spend it surrounded by a bunch of jokers (hello generalisation) at this rubbish event. Anyway, the mighty Faith No More are back and I’m pretty stoked about it. They’re band I really do enjoy and grew up listening to. Probably the number one band of my teenage years to be honest. Here’s hoping they do some kind of sideshow. Surely! As for Jane’s Addiction- any band than makes me want to get nude and dance is good in my books. Hopefully I manage to get along to a sideshow of theirs as well. So there it is… my two cents on the Soundwave Festival.
Festival season is well and truly on the way. Once again the Aussie summer will be flooded with festivals, there’s pretty much one on somewhere every bloody weekend. Some good, some bad. There are three 'fests' that I will most definitely attend this summer… Meredith (best festival in the country by a mile), Stereosonic (rug cutting central) and Pyramid Rock for new years. Pending the line-up you can probably throw ye old faithful Big Day Out into the mix as well. Can’t wait for summer! Short shorts and visors… get your disco on!.
There’s been some pretty decent new music out lately. Well I think it’s decent anyway. The new Kisschasy record ‘Seizures’ is a ripper pop rock release and probably the best work yet from the lads. It’s in stores today so do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy. The Bloody Beetroots have just dropped there electro punk bomb called ‘Romborama’ and it’s crazy good. Can’t wait to catch these guys again. One of the best live acts I’ve ever seen… it’s just chaos. Mariachi El Bronx (The Bronx) finally release there self titled number. I love what I’ve heard so far and can’t wait to see them live. The Bronx rule. Calvin Harris is a lord and is about to release his new LP titled ‘Ready For The Weekend’. From all reports this record will get dance floors shaking and if the first single is anything to go buy I’m going to froth on it. Harris is actually a wizard. Check out this youtube clip where Harris uses a ‘human synth’ to recreate his new single. Good times! A few tracks from Every Time I Die’s newy have caught my attention in the last week or two. Pretty keen for the album to come out. Lets face it… anything this band does is gold.
Anyway that’s all I’ve got for now. Hope everyone has a good weekend. Carn’ the doggies, go fishing, and put some chili plants in your garden.
God bless ya!

You've lost that loving feel'n
GO HEIGL GOOOO! You bloody beauty.
It’s been a while between blogs for me so I figured I should throw a new one up before The Punter cracks his diamond encrusted, gold plated whip at me for not writing enough junk on this bloody website.
A good friend of mine recently asked me if I was going to watch his band play a gig. These days I don’t get along to see many local bands play in rubbish venues across Melbourne… Why? Because I find most small time local bands to be shithouse. It’s just the same old stuff over and over and I honestly find it boring and a waste of time. If a good band I actually like is playing then I’ll head along and check it out (Dead Actors Club @ The Espy ruled on Saturday night) but odds are I will arrive just before they play and leave as soon as they finish. Now I’m not talking about any band or genre in particular here and this is just my humble opinion which many people will disagree on. I mean this is all a bit rich coming from a bloke who DJs in kitchens isn’t it? At the end of the day I don’t have a problem with dudes rocking out on a stage for a bit of fun. If that’s what floats your boat then good for you. I just think that the majority of small time local bands I have heard in the last couple of years are shit (in my opinion) and I’m not going to waste my time going to some dive of a venue to get my ears raped by a bunch of plebs re-hashing songs from 90’s punk bands. It’s just not my thing ya know…
Anyway, my friend asked me to come to his gig and to be honest; I think his band is shithouse. I told him that I think his band is shithouse and that I would probably not attend the gig but would be keen for beers after the show. He then went on a rant about supporting the scene maaaaan. The whole thought of a ‘scene’ makes me laugh. Why should I support something I couldn’t give a toss about? He then went on to sook about said scene and how more people should get along to shows and support local music. My response was simple… If you want more people to come to your shows then write/play good music. Sounds pretty logical to me. Anyway we agreed to disagree and I wished him all the best in his quest for living the rockstar dream.
Well that’s my rant for the week.
Life is good. I’ve just moved into a place in Carlton with a few mates and I’m loving it. Work is pretty quiet at the moment which is kind of a blessing as it’s giving me a chance to catch up on a few things. I’m also finding out what it feels like to leave the office at 5:00pm for once. The bloody Germans drive a hard bargain. I can’t complain though. For all you fishermen out there… get down to Brighton pier as the squid are on the bite. Dawn and Dusk are your peak periods of activity with bright pink or green jigs doing the damage. Hopefully going to get down after work tomorrow night and catch me some calamari for dinner. Station pier and Kefferd Rd pier have been producing big numbers of mullet lately as well so get out there and wet a line. Parks Victoria have been out on the prowl a lot lately which is good to see so if you plan on going fishing make sure you do the right thing and get a fishing license and obey bag/size limits. Otherwise you’ll cop a pretty big fine.
Stuff that rules at the moment-
-New Kisschasy single.
-New Dizzee Rascal single.
-New NASA video for Watchadoin.
-Albums from Major Lazer and Duck Sauce (great tunes, check it out).
-Finding $50 in a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in a while.
-Fishing DVDs in full HD and surround sound.
-My courtyard.
-Heilborn finally having a big win on the punt.
-Spring is near (time to plant out that veggie patch kids).
-Western Bulldogs marching towards a premiership.
Alby Mangels is a guru. What a guy.
Anyway that’s all I’ve got for this installment. I hope everyone has a great week. Until next time…
God bless ya!

Go The Bogan... Goooooo!
Thought I would just drop a quick blog entry whilst sipping a Gin and Cranberry juice on a lazy Sunday evening. Don’t worry, she’ll be short and sweet. The weekend has been swell. I’m moving house soon so most of it has been spent buying bits and pieces I need including a new bed and plasma TV. Went out for dinner last night with some good friends to a fantastic restaurant called Pan Asian on Chapel Street. If you’re not a pleb and love good modern asian cuisine and decent wine then best you check this place out. The pork cheek is to die for! I also witnessed the greatest gap to ever walk the earth. Love a good gap. You little beauty!
Anyway the main reason for this blog… I just entered my top 10 songs for the Triple J hottest 100 of all time. It’s a tough ask to narrow it down to 10 songs and I’ve been sitting on my shortlist of about 30 for a week or so. Anyway here is what I came up with in no particular order-
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Straight To You.
One of the greatest love ballards ever written in a way only Nick Cave could.
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Television- Marquee Moon.
NWA- Express yourself.
Another song from my youth. Such a cool beat.
You Am I- Rumble.
Outkast- Hey Ya!
What a brilliant song. If you don’t like this track, you don’t like music. It’s got it all. The song reminds me of my uni days and working at Jetty Surf, dancing on the counters and junk. It’s just got such a party vibe.
AC/DC- Whole Lotta Rosie.
Michael Jackson- Smooth Criminal.
I remember seeing the video for this track as a kid and going wow! It just makes me wanna cut rug.
Amazing.
Bjork- Hyperballard.
I really don’t know what to say about it. Brilliant piece of music.
Bruce Springsteen- Atlantic City.
The Boss is a guru and this is probably my favorite track of his. It’s just so raw.
Anyway that is all. Hope everyone had a ripper weekend. Carn’ the doggies! Until next time…
God bless ya!
