Local Bands Part 2

07.09.2009 | Binney | 12 COMMENTS

Its been awhile since I posted up a blog about another band so without further delay I present you with my next pick of the local scene, As Silence Breaks.

A metal bands know they’re doing something good when their fans are jumping and moshing in their lounge room when they put the band’s cd into their cd players. As Silence Breaks is one of those bands that you don’t need to see live to mosh to but the experiene is way better when you see them live. Planting their feet firmly in the metalcore genre these boys from Western Sydney don’t plan to pull any punches. Their songs are the perfect no bullshit stuff that you want to hear. From start to finish their songs give you your hit of aggressiveness and melody. The riffs are slick and groove worthy, just the kind of stuff you need when a circle pit needs forming. Vocalist Sam is a powerhouse with his vocal delivery and you haven’t heard him until you hear him live.

The band has a bit of history so you may already know of them. As Silence Breaks formed about two years ago and have been hard at work creating a strong fanbase as well as forging a reputation to proud of. 2008 saw As Silence Breaks hit the road playing over 50 shows across the country. In December of 2008 they played a 13 date national tour alongside Australian deathcore giants The Red Shore as well as For The Fallen Dreams and In Trenches. As Silence Breaks came into their own on this tour demonstrating that they aren’t a band to be taken lightly by showing off their dominating and commanding stage presence.

Guitarist Con Zagas had this to say when asked about what they think of their fans...
“Our fans are the most amazing group of people out! We wouldn’t be able to be where we are without them.”

Dominating is one of the words that come to mind when trying to describe their live performance. Vocalist Sam is literally an unstoppable juggernaut live and the rest of the band are unrelenting in their flawless performance. Everyone is kept busy throughout As Silence Breaks’ set. If you’re a mosher you’ll be moving plenty or if you just like to head bang you better be prepared to wake up with a sore neck the next day. Upon seeing them live I can say that their name is truly fitting as the silence is definitely breaks as soon as they begin delivering the goods.

As Silence Breaks is set to release their debut self titled album this year. They’re currently finishing up the Dead Rising tour with Vegas In Ruins, which will end early September. From there As Silence Breaks will be going on tour with Hereafter during October. International shows are also running through the rumor mill at this point in time but regardless of when it is to happen one thing is for sure, they’ll be playing around the world soon enough.

Local Bands Part 1

19.08.2009 | Binney | 25 COMMENTS

Its been a long time since a band grabbed my attention right away with just listening to a small sample of one track. Chelsea Smile oozes an award winning formula of metal and hardcore that has you head banging intensely right up to the chorus, which is where you feel compelled to belt your lungs out in harmony with them. Being barely a year old the band has already caused quite a stir. Below is some information on the bands history and what's coming up for them in the near future.

Sydney has been renowned for some of the hottest new talent in the metal and hardcore scene and Chelsea Smile is no exception. Wanting to take their music in a more technical and solid direction Chelsea Smile rose out of the ashes of a former generic band. Having recorded their first track, “Walking On Thin Ice”, in October last year it has gone on to become one of their most popular songs. In just its first week it racked up 10,000 plays and by the time it hit the three month mark it had over 80,000 plays from people worldwide. Refusing to rest on their laurels Chelsea Smile directed their efforts at making a name for themselves in the first half of 2009 and their efforts quickly paid off with a strong local following gathering behind them.

Having recently completed a 15 date tour with Resist The Thought Chelsea Smile has made a name for themselves across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. For such a young band they’ve accomplished a great deal through their dedication and hard work but they’ve got even bigger accomplishments looming on their horizon this year that will be add to their quickly growing collection.

Due to the buzz that Chelsea Smile has caused they have been given a supporting slot for UK based metal band Architects, who are currently on tour with Parkway Drive and August Burns Red, by Resist Records. They’ll be playing at Hermanns Bar on the 23rd of August.

The band has no time to rest once they’re done supporting Architects as September is set to be a busy month for Chelsea Smile. Their debut EP "An Awakening For The Misguided" is slated for a mid September release and they have shows lined up every weekend across Sydney until late September. Even amidst this busy schedule Chelsea Smile is writing new material that’ll be focusing on a solid hardcore edge without the tech influences.

When asked about touring and their upcoming ep drummer Glenn has this to say…

“No matter what the obstacle, working together is the way to overcome every problem. To see and be around the same people for months straight day in day out isn’t an easy thing to do but so long as you know what we’ve achieved was originally built on friendship you realize how far you’ve come, not only as a band but as people as well. In regards to the ep it isn’t about making something that bests everything else or to make something legendary or groundbreaking, but to make technically solid metalcore that we all love. We just want nothing more than people enjoying it.”

Very few bands can match the strides that Chelsea Smile is taking and if you haven’t caught up with them yet you better hit up their myspace for a full listing of all their upcoming shows.
