Melbourne's Fierce Mild are a very interesting band indeed.

To put it simply, the music that Fierce Mild make is like being caught in a very beautiful yet very strange dream; one that is as dynamic as it surreal. For this band displays a musical prowess that is far ahead of their actual years.

This artsy quartet creates deliciously dark soundscapes full of hazy, fuzzy psychedelic undertones combined with engaging, immense waves of shoegaze and post-rock. All with a folky, storytelling sense of lyricism and thematic intention, ensuring that even if the music doesn't take you on some kind of journey, the lyrics sure as fuck will.

There is also a very strong cinematic vibe that I get from this group's work. From the layers of guitars and the instrumental textures in general to the way the lyrics are delivered vocally, the visuals and flow of their live shows, and the narrative they're conveying visually and audibly; these guys seem to be truly adept at creating a captivating experience. It's like Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky but with actual vocals, and if that doesn't sound amazing to you, I don't know what will!

Fierce Mild are due to drop their debut LP sometime later this year, and it is definitely on my radar now, and I hope its release comes sooner rather than later. Especially since hearing that yet-to-be-fully-announced album's latest single - 'Solaris'. 'Solaris' (which you can buy here) has had me utterly bewitched lately. From the track's haunting, spine-chilling timbre, those wondrous guitars, the overall dynamics, the vast sense of spatial depth in the mix, to the mid-song screams that I look forward to on each spin; the hooks are well and truly deep within me now.

Of this new single, the band said that “Solaris was written entirely as a response to a dream journal. The result is a linear journey that takes multiple transgressions, tempos and instrumentation shifts erratically at carefully planned points, whilst still maintaining a natural flow, much in the way a dream makes little logical sense but the temporal feeling created is easily understood at the time the dream occurs. They also mention how the song's lyrics shift from the past to the now, straight on through to a future tense in a single instant, and how they are "continually playing with the idea of conscious and subconscious interaction”.

Now, that's a wanky kind of deep, but it's the kind of 'deep' that I can totally get behind!

Anyway, go do yourself a favour and check out the pure sonic journey that is 'Solaris' just below.
