Dead Letter Circus have re-envisioned their classic track, 'One Step', and have announced 'The Endless Mile' album, featuring alternative versions of their debut EP and other songs. Nice!

Dead Letter Circus are a household name in the Australian rock scene, and this beloved act is in the middle of some musical introspection.

A decade on since their solid debut EP, Dead Letter Circus have today announced 'The Endless Mile' album - an 11 track LP that features alternative versions of that initial six-track EP, as well as a selection of various re-imagined tracks from their following three albums; 'This Is The Warning', 'The Catalyst Fire' and of course, 'Aesthesis'.

The first single to be lifted from this "new" release is the re-imagining of their 'One Step' (the third and final single originally from 'This Is The Warning'), which you can stream below. This new take on the song strips the track right fucking back to its very basics - just the melody and the lyrics, with some acoustic and orchestral elements thrown in for good measure. This sonic approach shows off vocalist Kim Benzie's impressive vocal range alongside a new arrangement made up of pianos and strings. It's an interesting take on the 2010 rock anthem, and a version that I enjoyed just as much as the original surprisingly enough.

Basically, the band have taken an already epic track and turned it on its head in the best way possible.

This re-imagined record was tracked in the summer of 2016/2017, between December and January, with Forrester Savell and Matt Bartlem at Gold Coast's Loose Stones Studios at the engineering and production wheel. Also, Wolfmother's bassist, Ian Peres, came on board to play organ and piano across eight of the album's 11 tracks, whilst US studio composer Chris Carmichael arranged, played and recorded strings on six songs. Funnily enough, the biggest song I can find Carmichael's name attached to is Tim McGraw's 'If You're Reading This'...as well as doing the soundtrack for Shrek 2.

Not sure if that makes this a step-up or a step-down, but whatever!

In a press release, Benzie shared why the band selected this version of 'One Step' to be the first song to represent this new release, saying:

"A lot of the songs on this record had been singles in their previous incarnation so it was tough to pick one to lead with. Ten years ago the concept of a DLC song that is pretty much just piano and vocal wouldn't have entered my mind as possible. If you viewed the scope of what we can do musically as a pendulum swings, 'One Step' is at the furthest end, the inverse of our usual approach and the most bare a track of ours could ever be. In a similar way to the first time this song came to us, from the first note, it just felt so right, and so epic. As the most stripped-back track on the record, 'One Step' seemed like the perfect choice."
