I think that there is a universal rule that if your song starts with a crunchy bass line and a simple yet tight and groovy drum beat, you're usually onto a winner of a song. Well, that's most definitely the case for the new song from Columbus, Ohio melodic post-hardcore outfit Post Modern.

For a band that wouldn't go amiss on a lineup featuring Brand New, Circa Survive, Saosin, or even Australia's own The Comfort, Post Modern do a grand job of mixing together punchy drums and beefy bass lines with melodic, atmospheric guitars all with touching and dynamic vocal deliveries. From what I've gathered by this band's prior output, 'Speak Soft' is also a big step up in not only production and mixing, but also the band's actual execution and songwriting. Judging by their previous singles, 'Fury' and 'A Haunting', at least.

Post Modern's vocalist and guitarist Matty McClelland said that the song is actually about his journey with faith, saying: "I wrote this song describing my relationship with God, and trying to regain the communication and connection that has seemed to erode over the years,".

But, of course, not everyone has a relationship with God or Christ, and some of us follow other religions or are even atheists or agnostics (that last one applies to yours truly.)  Thankfully, McClelland covered this possible angle with the song's wider intention and it's interpretation. "However, it can describe a loss and desire to reconnect with anyone, like a friend, lover, or parent. 'Speak Soft' is a personal song for me specifically, but I wanted almost anyone to be able to relate to it and the struggle it describes" said the frontman in a press release.

Suss 'Speak Soft' and it's rather red-themed music video below or stream it over on Spotify.

I also do enjoy the Post Modern tribute band, Neo-Classical. That's a joke. There is no Post Modern cover band. Well, not yet, at least.
