Earlier this week, the first artist announcement for BIGSOUND Festival 2017 hit the ground with a boom, and man, it's indeed a big one.
A whopping 60 acts were announced, who will join a future additional 70 or so added artists; all hitting the live music precinct of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley come September 5th through to September 8th across the Valley’s multiple live venues. Like each of BIGSOUND’s previous 15 years of existence, the festival prides itself on showcasing multiple genres and welcomes any and all media, A&R, managers, label peeps, punters, and music lovers to attend the grand four-day proceedings.

For those who don't know, BIGSOUND is kind of like the music industry gathering equivalent of something like E3, but nowhere near as toxic or as bullshit. 2016's BIGSOUND also saw around 7,000 punters and industry folks alike come in from around Australia and the globe - all converging on Brisbane like bogans do to Facebook whenever there's an "upset" in the NRL - and those numbers will grow larger this year too.
In further diversifying the BIGSOUND lineup and brand, Aussie heavy talents like Polaris, Newcastle's Introvert, Sydney lords Endless Heights (yes!), Pandemic, and Melbourne noisemakers Clowns and Pagan (double yes!) will all perform respectively. They'll do so alongside dream pop queen Hatchie, Syndey/New York indie-pop artist Alex the Astronaut, Mansionair, Cronulla's Ruby Fields, and moody instrumentalists The Cactus Channel and many more. Returning local actls like indie-fuzz-lovers Hockey Dad, singer-songwriter Mama Kin and the born-in-the-wrong-generation act, The Creases will also make their presence known. The festival’s international reach also continues to expand, with the UK’s synth and distortion-loving rockers Splashh and New Zealand Critic’s Choice prize winners Bespin (fuckin' love that Star Wars reference) also coming Down Under for the festival. All ensuring that there’s at least something for everyone.
Now, I've never been to BIGSOUND myself, but a lineup like that makes me want to really make the trip up the East Coast for it!
All of these artists will get to showcase their various talents in front of fans and casual punters alike. As well as international and national music industry heavyweights, including but not limited to: Quentin Tarantino’s music supervisor, Mary Ramos, A&R from labels Domino, Sub Pop, Ninja Tune, Trouble In Mind, 4AD and Communion, as well as agents and promoters including Belmont Bookings, ATC Live, Goldenvoice, Rock City, and more.
Much like previous years, the latest BIGSOUND players are all eligible for a share of this year’s $100K Levi’s Music Prize, awarded in the past to an alumni list of: Flume, Courtney Barnett, Tash Sultana, The Jezabels, Gang of Youths, DMAs, Kingswood, The Temper Trap, DZ Deathrays, A.B. Original, and too many more to mention. However, this year, BIGSOUND will also give each act the opportunity to play twice over the scheduled four days, ensuring that fans, punters, A&R and industry heads alike get multiple chances to catch some of the bound to be big future names of Aussie music more than once. (The idea of seeing Endless Heights and Pagan twice in four days time is what my dreams are made of).
"Once again we’ve been spoiled for choice when it comes to the range of new and exciting talent being showcased at BIGSOUND,” stated BIGSOUND Programmer, Maggie Collins in a recent statement. “I know these acts will follow in the footsteps of those that have come before them and achieve the international recognition that they deserve."
