Creo's latest tune is the perfect cure for those Winter blues.

I loathe June and July for their cold and often miserable weather as well as their higher chance of rainfall and me usually getting sick from someone who just couldn't be arsed washing their hands or covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze. (There's a special place in hell for those kinds of people). But like the eventual credit roll after an utterly shite film, I adore August and September for their wonderful happy medium of chirpy, warmer weather and the calming rays of sunshine that they bring. Well, that is before our nation gets plunged into fiery damnation and I have to start worrying about bush fires out here in rural Victoria during summer.

Yet for each season of the year, I find there are certain bands and certain records that I listen to over others. For instance, I'm far more likely to listen to my favourite Millencolin records in summer whereas you can bet that I'm listening to a lot of gloomy post-rock like Collapse Under The Empire during winter. I do think there's a real strength in a band creating seasonal music that perfectly suits a certain period of the year or even a certain time of the day. In this case, Sydney indie-rock quartet Creo and their addictive, shimmery, guitar-driven single 'Subtitles For X, Y, Z' is just the right kind of sonic accompaniment for the end of our current winter and the soon-to-be blossoming start of glorious Spring. Whether that was the quartet's intent or not, I'm not sure and I kind of doubt it, but that's how it comes across and this new single has hit me at just the right time.

According to the band, this song was actually a real punish for them, and one that they had written ages ago but had just merely put up on the shelf. And I'm so glad that they took it down from the shelf, dusted it off, and released it as it's a magnificent track! On the song's original motivation, Creo frontman Jorjee Haman recently stated that 'Subtitles For X, Y, Z' is about coming to terms with and accepting one's own thoughts, ideas and beliefs, saying:

“We all go through the process where age and experience starts to skew the innocence and purity of our natural habits and emotions. I remember vividly the first time I fell in love or even lust, and it was a simple feeling, it just came over me, I didn’t think about the alternatives and possible scenarios, I just accepted the feeling for what it was. Nowadays, I battle with myself, to avoid certain feelings and thoughts because of past experiences. ‘Subtitles for X, Y, Z’ is all about getting out of your own head, fucking off agendas and accepting that those innocent quirks you try to hide need to be loved by yourself, first and foremost.”

With that thematic intent in mind, it's fitting that this melodically serene, summer anthem is an emotionally uplifting tune; begging for any and all personal baggage of the listener to be let go of in the process of their actual listening. It's also a song that is just begging for the festival circuit and stadium-sized crowds to sing along and swoon back at the NSW four-piece in perfect, blissful unison.

So leave that voice inside your head and whatever kind of shitty day you've had behind and stream 'Subtitles For X, Y, Z' below.

Creo's new EP of the same name arrives on September 8th and features fellow singles 'Give Me Yours' and 'Behind The Beat'.
