Australian Release Date For Lil Nas X Documentary 'Long Live Montero' Confirmed

The Australian release date for Lil Nas X’s new documentary, Long Live Montero, has been confirmed.

On Monday, 20 May, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will be available to rent and own on digital platforms, but what those platforms are hasn’t been confirmed. However, the documentary was announced to be heading to HBO’s streaming service, MAX, earlier this year, so subscribers will likely be able to watch it there.

In addition to the documentary landing on digital platforms, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will be presented at ACMI as part of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival this Saturday, 27 April. The documentary film screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with co-director / cinematographer Zac Manuel and MQFF Program Director Cerise Howard. You can buy tickets here.

Long Live Montero had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The documentary follows Lil Nas X throughout his 60-day tour of his debut album across North America.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Carlos López Estrada and Academy Award-nominated director and cinematographer Zac Manuel, the film has been described as an “all-access” project and paints an “intimate portrait of an artist navigating identity, family, expectations and acceptance, all while reflecting on his place within the legacy of Black, queer performers,” per a press release.

The statement continues, “We see Lil Nas X connect with us in his most personable way yet and uncover his personal experiences, from being raised as a black queer performer in the deep south, through to his rise to fame, and his place in the pop world as a 23-year-old artist.”

Lil Nas X made headlines earlier this year with his controversial J Christ video. The singer and rapper’s return to the spotlight arrived after he made waves for responding to a homophobic “joke” made by Dave Chappelle in his latest Netflix special, The Dreamer, in which Chappelle called the rapper “the gayest n***** that ever lived”.

Lil Nas X responded to Chappelle’s joke in a tweet, quipping that critics have “gotta let Call Me By Your Name go”. He added: “Me and the Devil broke up three years ago. Y’all acting like children of divorce.”
