Blur's Damon Albarn Lashes Out At Coachella Audience: 'You're Never Seeing Us Again'

Blur frontman Damon Albarn wasn’t impressed by the weekend one audience at Coachella on Saturday (13 April), promising them that the band wouldn’t return in the future.

An admittedly odd setlist, Blur played a career-spanning performance that included their latest album, last year’s The Ballad Of Darren, alongside their ‘90s classics and two features from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers (Death Of A Party and a traditional cover of Bird Song).

For the Coachella attendees that held the barrier all day waiting for day two headliner Tyler, The Creator, to take the main stage, we doubt there’s much they cared for less than Blur at 7:30 pm. But Albarn was equally unimpressed with the crowd, lashing out after the audience again didn’t get involved with a singalong during the tenth song of their set, Girls & Boys.

“You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it,” Albarn said. However, follow-up track Song 2 fared better, with the audience getting into the alt rock classic.

Discussing the latter song’s impact, Albarn commented, “This song has been so good to us… But I did get shown a TikTok of it being kind of performed by a vacuum cleaner, which is, you know… It is humbling and inspiring at the same time.”

This year's Coachella headliners are Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat, with No Doubt billed as special guests. Elsewhere on the line-up, the 2024 edition of the festival locked in J Balvin, Deftones, Taking Back Sunday, Lil Uzi Vert, Justice, Peggy Gou, Ice Spice, Bleachers, Khruangbin, Lil Yachty, Bebe Rexha, RAYE, Sabrina Carpenter, plus Aussie stars Dom Dolla and Flight Facilities, and many more international acts.

In December, Albarn revealed he might be preparing to farewell Blur again.

“It is time to wrap up this campaign. It’s too much for me,” Albarn told French publication Les Inrockuptibles, per Far Out Magazine. “It was the right thing to do and an immense honour to play these songs again, spend time with these guys, make an album, blah-blah-blah.”

He continued, “I’m not saying I won’t do it again; it was a beautiful success, but I’m not dwelling on the past.”
