The most anticipated Bluey episode so far, the 28-minute epic The Sign, has dropped, and the most emotional ending possible was soundtracked by local artist Megan Washington.

The song Lazarus Drug was an album track from Batflowers, her third studio album that appeared in 2020. The song was the perfect soundtrack to the montage ending the Bluey episode as the family made the choice to stay in their house.

The irony of the track is that the release of Batflowers itself was impacted by COVID-19, creating a challenging time for Australian musicians trying to find an audience for their music. The overlooking of the track in the Australian music zeitgeist may well have been from people being forced to stay in their houses, while the rise of Lazarus Drug may well be credited in the end with Bluey staying in hers.

Bluey creator Joe Brumm told The Daily Telegraph, “Megan's song Lazarus Drug, one of the greatest songs written this century. Recording it with her and composer Joff (Bush) and the whole music team was one of the highlights of the whole Bluey experience. I know for her it was special too.”

Already in the Bluey universe, Washington voices Calypso, a teacher a Bluey’s school and plays a significant role in the narrative of The Sign episode.

Megan Washington has worked with Joff Bush, Bluey’s musical director, previously and has been part of the music for the Australian series Fisk.

Already a fan favourite, Washington played Lazarus Drug as an encore on her recent national tour. The Music reviewed her Melbourne show, calling the song’s performance ‘breathtaking’. It’s unlikely that any Bluey fan will disagree with the sentiment.
